Limestone & Garrigue

Clay-limestone, rolled pebbles and fragrant garrigue: the raw material of every Domaine Pilenium cuvée, on the Pla de l’Ille at Peyriac-de-Mer.

STONE AND SCENT

A soil that gives tension, a garrigue that gives scent.

On the Pla de l’Ille, a preserved peninsula at Peyriac-de-Mer, Domaine Pilenium’s twenty hectares sink their roots into clay-limestone soils mixed with alluvial deposits and rolled pebbles. This poor, free-draining base forces the vine to draw from deep below: yields stay low, but concentration and mineral tension rise.

All around, the Mediterranean garrigue — thyme, rosemary, rock rose, wild fennel — encircles the plots. Carried on the wind, these resinous essences settle on the berries and mark our wines with their balsamic notes, somewhere between freshness and the warmth of the South.

It is this alliance — the backbone of the limestone, the scent of the garrigue, the full southern exposure — that gives the Pilenium cuvées their definition: precise, saline wines, deeply rooted in their place.

THREE STRENGTHS OF THE SOIL

What the land passes on.

The limestone

Clay-limestone and rolled pebbles: drainage, freshness and mineral tension on the palate.

The garrigue

Thyme, rosemary and rock rose leave a resinous, balsamic imprint on the grapes.

Due south

A generous exposure that slowly ripens healthy, sun-drenched grapes.

A UNIQUE PLACE

The Pla de l’Ille, a preserved peninsula.

The estate alone occupies a peninsula of around 800 hectares classified as a protected natural area, between vines, garrigue and water. No industrial neighbours here: a sheltered setting where biodiversity is part of the work.

This geographical singularity protects the plots and feeds a living ecosystem — beneficial insects, birds, ground cover — at the heart of our organic farming.
